Commonly known as Swamp cucak cucakrawa, cangkurawah (Sunda), and barau-barau (Malay). In English called the Straw-headed Bulbul, referring to the color of head pale yellow-straw. Scientific name is Pycnonotus zeylanicus (Gmelin, 1789). Cucak Swamp classified as medium-sized bird, the total body length (measured from tip of beak to tip of tail) of about 28 cm.

Males and females similar in color, feather crown (the top side of the head) and earplugs orange or pale yellow straw, feathers malar stripe on the side of the chin and bridle line that crosses a black eye. Bulupunggung streaked olive-brown streak white, wings and tail greenish brown or olive green. Chin and throat feathers are white or quasi-white, neck and chest hair gray and white streaked. Abdominal fur is gray, and yellow rump feathers. Iris reddish, black beak, and legs dark brown color. In each origin there is a difference of colors ranging from large bodies of sumatra, color brownish yellow head. In contrast originating from Kalimantan only yellow only. Cucak Swamp Bird or Cucak Rowo is one of the tribal members merbah. Merbah or also called cucak-cucakan (familia Pycnonotidae) is the warbler tribe of Africa and tropical Asia. These birds mostly have a melodious voice and songs are diverse, often times the forest became quiet by his voice, especially in the mornings and evenings. In English, these birds are known as the bulbuls.

Merbah originally in Malay refers to some kind of furry grim warbler in the bush, including also the types of birds coney, Tepus, bentet and others. Here, for the sake of standardization of naming as used LIPI, merbah limited use to refer to the birds of the family Pycnonotidae. Besides called merbah, the birds of this tribe has several other common designation as cucak (Java), tempuruk, empuruk. tempulu ', empulu', pampulu, empuloh (various Malay in Sumatra and Kalimantan), and others.
