Sumba Indonesia bagaian Timur

The importance for biodiversity conservation, ecological vulnerability and the people that depends on natural resources has driven Burung Indonesia as one of its priority sites. Activity in Sumba was started in 1992 BirdLife International-Indonesia Programme in cooperation with the Ministry of Forestry to in conducting some biodiversity researchs.

Located in the province of Nusa Tenggara Timur, Sumba, with an area of 11,051.041 km is a vulnerable island, with dry limestone substrate, and a total rainfall of just 500-800 mm per year. Although dominated by savanna, 6.5% of the total land area of Sumba is primary forest.

Main livelihood in Sumba is from agriculture sector. For their living, the people also depends on forests product such as timber, rattan and tubers. Through development index, Sumba is one of the lowest in Indonesia. On the other hand, general population of Sumba is threatened with malaria, drought and fires, crop and harvest failure which are commonly occurs.

In 1997, Burung Indonesia opens Sumba field office and starts "Collaborative conservation and management in Sumba forest". This is to achieve sustainability through partnership with communities and local government as well as to ensure sustainable livelihood for the community surrounds Manupeu Tanadaru that eventually become Manupeu-Tanadaru National Park in 1998.

At the same time, Burung Indonesia also conduct "Yellow-crested Cockatoo Conservation" activity through population monitoring, awareness and promote law enforcement on its illegal capture and trade. Information on conservation has also promoted and made it to local education curricula titled "Forest and Birds of Sumba Island". This materials is used in elementary schools in three districts (Central Sumba, West Sumba and South-west Sumba).
